OPEN/stor automates the time-consuming task of migrating files to free up valu-able hard disk capacity, allowing IS managers to spend their time on more important issues Once installed, it enables the creation of a multi-layer secondary storage hierar-chy consisting of magnetic, and optional optical and tape storage devices OPEN/stor operates transparently to monit`'r the capacity of the storage devices under its control If a capacity threshold on a managed disk is exceeded OPEN/stor takes over, automati-cally migrating files based on file inactivity, and relocating them to a lower cost storage medium in the storage hierarchy A placeholder remains on the server or client disk after files have been migrated so that all files appear to network users as though they were still residing on the original NT workstation or server volume.
