AvailHSM
AvailHSM provides total storage management for NetWare
3.x and 4.x file servers, and Windows NT servers and clients. In a NetWare
environment, AvailHSM resides on a NetWare server and manages selected
volumes on NetWare servers. To manage volumes on Windows NT servers and
clients, AvailHSM resides on either a Windows NT server or client. A dedicated
HSM server will improve system performance, but is not required. The Base
System monitors the selected network data and migrates files to the HSM
system. A small placcholder file (stub file) remains on the managed volume.
This placcholder file provides clients transparent access to files that
have been migrated to the HSM system. AvailHSM provides the administrator
with several options when the AvailHSM storage hierarchy is full; overflow,
discard oldest data, stop migration and add an additional storage device.
One AvailHSM System includes licensing for up to 20 managed NetWare file
servers, or 20 Windows NT servers and/or clients and supports up to 4 SCSI
buses.
AvailHSM Storage
Capacity
The AvailHSM Storage Capacity License is a capacity
"license" for HSM storage peripherals. Capacity Licenses provide
AvailHSM support for additional magnetic, optical and tape capacity.
AvailHSM Magnetic Layer - The first layer of the
AvailHSM storage hierarchy is SCSI hard disk.
- The AvailHSM Magnetic layer serves as a staging area
when files are migrated to HSM. File recall is quickest from this layer.
- AvailHSM uses a minimum of three migration volumes.
- The migration volume size (maximum of 2 GB) is configured
during installation. Migration volumes can be sized to obtain optimum HSM
system performance.
AvailHSM Optical Layer (Optional) - AvailHSM supports
multiple rewritable Magneto-Optical jukeboxes as a secondary HSM layer.
Optical jukeboxes are attached via SCSI connections.
- Optical jukeboxes from 20 gigabytes to 2 terabytes are
supported.
- AvailHSM uses multiple optical drives within a jukebox
to service simultaneous file recalls.
- Migration volumes are best sized as even divisors of
the approximate capacity of one side of an optical platter.
- The maximum size for a migration volume on the HSM magnetic
layer is roughly equal to the capacity of one side of an optical platter.
AvailHSM Tape Layer (Optional) - The third and
final layer in the AvailHSM hierarchy is tape. Multiple tape libraries
attached via SCSI connections are used in this HSM layer.
- AvailHSM supports 4mm, 8mm, and DLT tape libraries from
5 gigabytes to 5 terabytes
- AvailHSM uses multiple tape drives within a library to
service simultaneous file recalls
- AvailHSM provides enterprise-wide connectivity to IBM's
ADSM storage resources through AvailHSM's ADSM Storage Capacity License.
This Capacity License allows data on NetWare servers or Windows NT servers
or clients to be migrated to a centralized "glasshouse" via TCP/IP,
IPX/SPX or SNA LU6.2
AvailHSM
(Available for NetWare and Windows NT)
AvailHSM
software manages the storage of files by utilizing a hierarchy of SCSI
storage devices. AvailHSM is a cost effective solution to the problem of
running out of disk space while still maintaining large amounts of data
on line. AvailHSM versions are available to manage either NetWare or Windows
NT servers. A diagram showing the data flow in and out of an AvailMHSM
system is illustrated below.

HSM Storage Solution
| Disaster Recovery: As migrated files enter
the HSM system, they are backed up by AvailHSM to provide data protection
for all HSM layers.
HSM Magnetic Layer
Files in HSM migration volumes move to the next HSM layer in "file
groupings" the same size as the migrate volumes.
HSM Optical Layer
AvailHSM supports multiple libraries on optical and tape HSM layers.
